Rubber mulch is denser and heavier than wood — a 0.8 cubic foot bag weighs about 35 to 40 lb. It does not decompose, so you install it once at full depth rather than topping up every year.
Playground safety depth
For fall protection under play equipment, the depth depends on the fall height. As a guide: 6 inches of rubber mulch protects a fall of about 10 feet, 4 inches protects about 6 feet, and 3 inches about 4 feet. Check the specific product's certified critical-fall-height rating (ASTM F1292) and the fall height of your equipment.
One cubic foot of rubber mulch covers about 2 square feet at 6 inches deep, or 4 square feet at 3 inches.
Landscape use
In beds, 1.5 to 2 inches of rubber mulch is enough for weed suppression and it stays put — it does not blow or wash away like light wood mulch, and it will not need replacing for a decade or more. It does not feed the soil, so it suits shrub borders and pathways more than annual or vegetable beds.
Bags and pallets
Rubber mulch is sold in bags of roughly 0.8 cubic feet and in bulk pallets of 40 to 76 bags. For a full playground, pallets are far cheaper per cubic foot. Order about 10% extra for settling and edge loss, and install over a firm sub-base with edging and, ideally, a geotextile underlayment.
Common rubber-mulch mistakes
Too shallow for the fall height. Match the depth to the equipment — 6 inches for a 10-foot fall, and confirm the product's ASTM F1292 rating.
No border or underlayment. Edging keeps the mulch in the pit; a geotextile separates it from soil and keeps it clean.
Using it in vegetable beds. Rubber adds nothing to soil — keep it to play areas, paths and shrub borders.
Buying bags for a playground. Pallets are far cheaper per cubic foot at that scale.
